The Opportunity
Our client, a busy and long-established motor dealership in Co. Mayo, is seeking an Accountant / Part-Qualified Accountant to take on a broad and responsible finance role within the business.
Operating across Vehicle Sales, Service, Parts and Aftersales, the business requires a commercially minded finance professional who can provide accurate financial information while working closely with senior management and departmental managers.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Part-Qualified Accountant, experienced Assistant Accountant or Accountant looking for greater responsibility and involvement in the commercial side of a successful business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Management Accounts
- Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports
- Maintain accurate financial ledgers and balance sheet reconciliations
- Analyse profitability across Vehicle Sales, Service, Parts and Aftersales
- Assist with annual budgets, forecasts and cashflow projections
- Monitor financial KPIs and report on performance and variances
- Provide meaningful financial information to support management decision-making
Cashflow & Treasury
- Monitor daily cashflow and banking activities
- Prepare cashflow reports and projections for senior management
- Assist with funding lines and treasury requirements
- Oversee debtor control and supplier payment management
- Monitor working capital requirements
Payroll
- Manage or oversee payroll processing
- Process commission calculations
- Ensure compliance with PAYE, PRSI, pension and other statutory obligations
- Produce payroll reports and maintain accurate records
Motor Industry Accounting
- Manage vehicle stock reconciliations and cost tracking
- Assist with VAT margin scheme calculations for used vehicles
- Manage BIK reporting and relevant Revenue compliance
- Work closely with departmental managers to monitor costs, margins and profitability
Audit, Tax & Compliance
- Prepare VAT returns and Revenue submissions
- Support annual audit preparation and liaise with external auditors
- Ensure financial records remain accurate and audit-ready
- Maintain strong internal financial controls
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and reporting
Systems & Reporting
- Work with the company’s Dealer Management System and accounting software
- Develop and streamline management reporting
- Identify opportunities for greater efficiency and automation
- Maintain a high standard of financial data accuracy
Candidate Requirements
Ideally, candidates will be qualified or part-qualified ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent.
However, we are also interested in candidates with strong relevant accounting experience who may not hold a formal accounting qualification.
You should have:
- Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals
- Management accounts and financial reporting experience
- Good knowledge of VAT and tax compliance
- Cashflow management experience
- Payroll knowledge
- Strong Excel and financial systems skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
- Good commercial awareness
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Experience within the motor trade, automotive sector, retail or another multi-department commercial environment would be particularly beneficial.
The Person
Qualifications and technical ability are important, but attitude is equally important.
We are looking for someone who is organised, dependable and proactive; someone willing to get involved in the day-to-day operation of the business and comfortable working collaboratively with senior management and departmental teams.
