Project Design Engineer – Mayo
Location: County Mayo

Reports to: Lead Engineering Manager
Arcon Recruitment is recruiting a skilled Project Design Engineer on behalf of an established engineering and manufacturing company in County Mayo.
The Project Design Engineer will convert client-issued ductwork layouts and specifications into detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings. The successful candidate will manage project design deliverables from the pre-order stage through to production handover, ensuring designs meet quality, compliance, cost and programme requirements.
This role covers both pre-insulated panel ductwork and traditional ducting systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the main technical contact for clients and contractors on assigned projects.
- Review client-issued ductwork layouts, technical specifications and project documentation.
- Produce detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks and Revit.
- Create drawings for ductwork, plenums and associated mechanical components.
- Prepare material take-offs, bills of materials and component lists.
- Coordinate with production and research and development teams to ensure designs can be manufactured efficiently.
- Overlay ductwork designs into federated Navisworks BIM models.
- Identify, review and resolve design clashes before fabrication begins.
- Work with clients, consultants and project stakeholders to address technical issues.
- Produce custom component and installation drawings, including flashings, transitions, coving, support placement and logistics layouts.
- Implement and maintain CAD automation tools, including DriveWorks, to improve design efficiency.
- Develop project area codes aligned with manufacturing and project schedules.
- Prepare design information for standard and non-standard ductwork components.
- Support the transition from existing Excel-based processes to future CAD-to-CAM workflows.
- Manage project documentation and update design deliverables within Procore.
- Liaise with consultant engineers, Quantity Surveyors and the commercial team to review project scope and refine designs.
- Coordinate with procurement, operations, fabrication and other internal departments.
- Support fabrication teams during project handover.
- Ensure production personnel receive the correct drawings, instructions and technical information.
- Attend design-review and project coordination meetings.
- Incorporate approved design revisions into project documentation.
- Respond promptly to requests for information and other technical queries.
- Ensure all design outputs comply with project specifications, quality requirements and relevant industry standards.
- Provide regular updates on project progress and departmental performance indicators.
Candidate Requirements
- Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least three years’ experience in mechanical design, HVAC design or building-services engineering.
- Advanced SolidWorks skills.
- Proficiency in Revit and BIM coordination.
- Experience using Navisworks for clash detection and project coordination.
- Experience with CAD automation software such as DriveWorks.
- Familiarity with ventilation and ductwork standards, including SMACNA and DW144.
- Experience producing fabrication or manufacturing drawings.
- Understanding of material take-offs, bills of materials and production handovers.
- Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage several project deliverables and meet agreed deadlines.
- Proactive approach and willingness to take responsibility for assigned projects.
- Interest in adopting new technologies, including AI-assisted design tools, to improve efficiency, accuracy and innovation.
- Fluent English for professional and business purposes.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Ireland and the European Union.
