Job Description

Our client, an established builders’ merchant and agricultural supplies business in Castlebar, is seeking an experienced Yard / Stores Supervisor.

The successful candidate will manage the safe, efficient and well-organised operation of the yard and stores. This is a hands-on supervisory role with responsibility for six full-time employees and up to three additional seasonal employees during busy periods.

The position covers goods in, goods out, order picking, stock control, customer collections, yard presentation and Health & Safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise, organise and motivate the yard and stores team.
• Allocate daily duties and ensure adequate staffing across goods in, goods out, order picking, customer collections and deliveries.
• Set clear standards for productivity, teamwork, safety and customer service.
• Monitor staff performance and address operational issues promptly.
• Ensure incoming goods are checked against relevant documentation and stored correctly.
• Identify and report damaged goods, shortages and delivery discrepancies.
• Ensure customer orders are picked accurately and prepared safely for collection or delivery.
• Coordinate customer collections and liaise with Sales, Transport and Delivery Drivers.
• Maintain accurate stock locations and support regular stock checks.
• Investigate stock discrepancies and take steps to reduce damage, loss and theft.
• Maintain a clean, organised and professionally presented yard and stores.
• Ensure walkways, loading areas, access routes and customer areas remain clear and safe.
• Ensure products are stacked, stored, moved and loaded safely.
• Maintain safe separation between customers, pedestrians, vehicles and material-handling equipment.
• Ensure employees follow safe working procedures and wear the required PPE.
• Report accidents, hazards, near misses and damaged equipment promptly.
• Ensure customers receive a professional, helpful and efficient service.
• Maintain effective communication with Sales, Buying, Transport and Management.

Candidate Requirements

• Previous experience supervising a yard, warehouse, stores or distribution operation.
• Experience within builders’ providers, construction supplies, agricultural supplies, hardware or a similar environment is highly desirable.
• Proven ability to lead, organise and motivate a team.
• Experience with goods in, goods out, order picking and stock control.
• Strong knowledge of Health & Safety procedures within a yard or warehouse.
• Good organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to order accuracy.
• Confident dealing with customers and resolving day-to-day issues.
• Ability to work effectively in a busy, hands-on environment.
• Basic computer and stock-system skills.
• Forklift experience or a valid forklift licence would be an advantage.
• Knowledge of building materials, agricultural feed, hardware or related products would be beneficial.
